Incentive Calculator FAQ

When can I access the IRA’s incentives?

All tax credits are available now. Not all rebate programs are live yet. Some states have paused their programs due to recent uncertainty regarding federal funding. We will continue to monitor the situation. For the latest information on rebates in your state, please consult your state energy office’s website. To learn more about how the electrification rebate and efficiency rebate programs work, visit our guide.

Yes! The IRA’s electrification rebates and electrification tax credits may be used by renters. State programs may allow renters to request home energy audits and qualify for a variety of efficiency rebates, with approval of their landlord. Many upgrades are portable, so renters can bring them to their next homes and won’t have to leave any savings behind. Renters are also eligible for the used and new EV tax credits.

Probably! It's up to your state, local government, and utility to decide if you're allowed to stack their incentives on top of the IRA's rebates and tax credits, but so far, we have seen many state programs allow combination with other existing programs, including federal tax credits.

You should include anyone that you claim as a dependent on your taxes. That could be children, grandparents, or other relatives who you support financially. You should also include your spouse or domestic partner if you file taxes together.

If you are married, you should include your spouse's income. If you claim any dependents with income on your taxes, you should include their income, too. If you receive child support, social security income, or other types of non-taxable income, include those too.

Some incentives are income-limited, so our calculator uses your income and zip code to figure out if you qualify.

To learn more about how we use the information you provide to determine which incentives you may be eligible for, please consult our Incentive Calculator Methodology.

What is a rebate?

A rebate reduces the overall cost of a product or service by providing money during or after a purchase. Consumer rebates are provided by government agencies, utility companies, or non-profit organizations. There are a few different types of consumer rebates and they work differently.

A tax credit is a credit that reduces the amount of tax you owe or increases your refund amount. Typically, claiming a tax credit requires purchasing and installing specific energy-efficient products or making eligible home improvements in a specific timeframe. You will claim tax credits when filing your income tax returns.
