  • Efficiency win-win. Heat pump water heaters (HPWHs) are the most energy-efficient water heaters on the market. By pulling existing heat from surrounding air, they use less energy while still delivering reliable, steady hot water for everyday use. Less energy can mean lower bills for you and less stress on the grid. Win-win.

  • Smart and flexible. Many models allow scheduling, which can shift energy use to off-peak hours, saving money and reducing strain on the local electrical grid.

  • Natural dehumidifiers. As they pull heat from surrounding air, HPWHs also dry out the damp, cool air in basements, laundry rooms, or garages.

  • Leak detection and protection. Advanced models can detect leaks and alert homeowners via smartphone, potentially shutting down the unit to prevent water damage.

Our fixed pricing is a result of negotiated discounts with specific equipment partners. As a result, we do not allow customers to choose which brand of water heater system is installed through our program. Your contractor will help you choose the best tank size for your home. We are excited to offer participating households GE Geospring Heat Pump Water Heaters with FlexCapacity. The latest in heat pump water heater technology, the Geospring model comes in a variety of sizes, is Energy Star certified, can be installed in most homes with a 120V outlet, and offers wireless leak detection with automatic water shut-off.

  • Program pricing includes equipment, installation labor, and permitting fees. See a more detailed breakdown here, along with an example cost scenario. The price is the same for emergency and proactive replacements!

  • Participating households replacing gas water heaters can also access San José Clean Energy San José Clean Energy (SJCE) Ecohome Rebates to lower installation costs. From April 1 to May 31, available rebates include $3,000 for market-rate households and $4,000 for income-qualified households or those in Environmental Justice communities (check your eligibility here).

  • San José Clean Energy’s customers can finance their installation through the EcoHome payment plan. The payment plan is interest-free, with no-money down, for up to $5,000, for a term of up to 5 years. The payment plan amount is repaid conveniently through your monthly electric bill. For more information on eligibility and how to apply, see details here. Applications are typically processed within 5 days.

  • Note that customers will be required to have a fully executed customer loan agreement before installation can begin. If you are in an emergency replacement scenario, please email AskPrograms@sanjoseca.gov to request that your application be fast-tracked. Please note that this may delay the timeline for your heat pump water heater installation.
