Rebates to go electric now available in New York

The first Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates (HEAR) program has arrived! If you’re a low- or moderate-income homeowner or renter in New York, you may be able to upgrade your home with energy efficiency upgrades and electric appliance installations at little or no cost.

How does it work?

Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates are available in New York through EmPower+, a program managed by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). This single program combines existing EmPower+ funding sources with HEAR funding. Eligible households apply directly to the program and are matched with a participating program contractor. A no-cost home energy assessment is completed before any energy efficiency upgrades or electric appliance installations.

What happens next?

Your contractor will submit a scope of work to EmPower+ based on the eligible upgrades you’d like to complete. Your contractor will receive the rebates for these projects and they’ll pass on the savings to you as an upfront discount. In future phases of the program, New Yorkers will be able to claim upfront rebates at retailers!

How much can I get?

After a participating program contractor completes a energy assessment, low- and moderate-income, single-family homeowners may qualify for up to $14,000 in HEAR rebates for the following:

Energy efficiency upgrades

  • An electrical panel upgrade: $4,000

  • An electrical writing upgrade to modernize wiring or support appliances: $2,500

  • Air sealing, ventilation, and insulation to improve your home’s energy efficiency: $1,600

Electric appliance installations:

  • A heat pump to heat and cool your home (if your current system meets eligibility requirements): $8,000

  • A heat pump water heater to heat your water: $1,750

How much can I get in total?

For low-income, single-family households

Combined with a maximum $10,000 of current EmPower+ funding for energy efficiency upgrades and electric appliances, low-income, single-family households may now qualify for a total of $24,000 through EmPower+.
